Pool covers have quite a few benefits once you start learning more about them. Not only are they used to help save money on heating bills, which is always important when you have a swimming pool of any sort, but these pool covers can also help create safety around the swimming pool as well. In fact, most homeowners, even ones without kids, make sure they always have a pool cover of some sort on top of their pool and spa. The point in how they are more secure is sort of obvious, but maybe not the point in how they save you money. Evaporation is one of the leading causes of losing heat in your swimming pool! Even if you have something like a solar pool heating system, if you don’t use a cover, you could still be losing heat from your pool. In fact, studies show that outdoor pools lose around 70% of the energy from evaporation and indoor pools lose about 50%. Pool covers come in a wide range of shapes, sizes and colors so if you are worried about finding one to fit your oddly shaped pool or you want to keep up with the design of the pool, you can do that! In reality a pool cover, is really just a cover that is usually made of some kind of material to cover over the pool itself. But, there are many different kinds of covers, so choosing the right one for your needs is incredibly important. Make sure that when you are looking for covers, you look for things that are beneficial to your specific climate too such as UV coated covers for warmer location. Vinyl Covers These tend to save you more money and last much longer because they are made of a much heavier material. These also come in regular vinyl or insulated vinyl. The insulated covers will help keep your pool warm to a certain extent, but they also fight the good fight against evaporation. These vinyl covers also tend to be a heavier investment, but they are definitely worth it and will last a lot longer than something like a bubble cover. Bubble Covers or Solar Covers This is a very thin material. Think of bubble wrap when you think of this material. It’s also very cheap, but it doesn’t have any features like vinyl does. Obviously of the two, I would choose the more expensive route, because it’s a good investment. But, that depends on you and what your budget for your pool is. If you do choose bubble, you will have to purchase a new one quicker than you would have to purchase a vinyl one because they do wear out much quicker. Obviously these choices may seem a little silly, most people would choose length of time used versus money it costs, but again, that's up to you and what is best suited for your needs right now. Once you go through and figure out what type of pool covers you want, you will then need to pick out what "type" of pool cover you want; manual, semi-automatic and automatic, again each one has its benefits!

- Manual:  As the name states, there are no mechanics in this option.  You do everything yourself from pulling it out, putting it over the pool, pulling it in, folding it up and putting it someplace where it won’t get ruined.  This one takes a little more man-power and elbow grease depending on your size of the pool, but it’s also the cheapest option and you don't have to worry about anything breaking down because it’s all man-propelled.

- Semi Automatic:  If you want a little help with pulling, placing it over the pool, pulling it out and rolling it up, the semi would be a good option for you.  It’s pretty easy to use and it includes a motor pulley system which is usually built into the deck.

- Automatic:  If you absolutely want nothing to do with maintaining the cover itself and you want a system to do everything, or almost everything for you, the automatic system is a great option.  It does cost a significant amount more than the other two above, but hey if you have the extra money, you may as well spend it on this bad boy!  This is a permanent reel system that is usually mounted in the deck.  It’s incredibly strong which means it can pull in any cover no matter the size or weight and it does everything at the touch of a simple button.
